Peningkatan pesat terutama dirasakan oleh game online serta gaming streamer, sedangkan eSports jadi satu aspek dari industri gaming yang terkena dampak negaif dari pandemi COVID-19.Meski begitu, video game yang mengandalkan story-telling The Last of Us 2, jadi pemenang terbesar dalam Golden Joystick Awards 2020.

Dikembangkan oleh Naughty Dog, The Last of Us 2 mendapat nominasi dalam 10 kategori dan sukses membawa pulang 6 di antaranya, termasuk penghargaan paling bergengsi sebagai Ultimate Game of the Year (GOTY). Naughty Dog juga diganjar penghargaan sebagai Studio of the Year berkat performa gemilang dari The Last of Us 2.Golden Joystick Awards sebagai salah satu penghargaan tertua dalam industri gaming tersebut kedatangan beberapa nama baru pada tahun ini, seperti Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockdown, Genshin Impact, atau game lama yang mampu bangkit kembali seperti Among Us.
